Bringing the world together by inspiring, motivating and empowering individuals to Think BIG, be BOLD and ACT NOW on pursuing and achieving their dreams and goals
If you asked me five years ago, about writing a blog, I would have told you never, EVER was that going to happen… and those who know me well would agree.
What made me write it?
Well, I have never been interested in writing publicly and if the truth be told, aren’t there enough blogs out there on just about every topic you can think about, including those topics you wouldn’t even think about? The last thing I wanted to do was add to the list of blogs – do you really want to be greeted by another blog, when you open your email, with a seductive choice of words in the subject line intentionally used to entice you to click and read?
What caused me to change my mind and write this blog?
I had an epiphany!
Well not quite that but close enough – a friend of mine told me it was time to do it. He said, and I paraphrase, if you are serious about following through on what I wanted to do I needed to go all in… and that included writing a blog. I knew it was inevitable given what I wanted to do! Now let’s be clear, I made every effort not to; this included simply saying no, which obviously didn’t work. I tried to reach a compromise by suggesting using an alias, and yes you guessed it – he said no. I told him I would think about it.
I went home that evening and thought about it…a lot!
After a couple hours and some tossing and turning I sat up and this is what I said to myself:
Paul: Do you intend to portray yourself on this blog as someone different to who you are in person?
Self: Hell no!
Paul: Well then, there is nothing to be all concerned about. Think of it this way, interacting with people online is no different than interacting with someone in person (well generally speaking). You don’t change who you are, you simply continue being you.
That was my epiphany… somewhat… and here you are reading my first blog (another example why we should never say never).
Who am I?
Believe me when I say it took a long time to be able to talk about myself and describe me to me first, and then to others. I am not sure when this transformation took place, whether it was overnight or over time (my guess is it was over time). Regardless of how and when this took place, I am simply happy it did.
Okay, so back to who am I. First, I am not going to bore you with all the mundane details like what school, college or university I attended. I am certainly not going to get into politics or religion. I am also going to guess that you probably could care less about my hobbies and… ok, it’s soccer, chess and having a great time (yes, I know it’s not quite a hobby, so let’s call it a way of living). Without wasting any more time let me tell you who I am or more so what I believe:
I believe that pursuing your dreams can increase the satisfaction, purpose and happiness in your life and in the life of others. A person’s dream should not be measured on how big or small it’s perceived to be but on the positive impact it has the potential to have on that person, their family, friends, strangers and their community. The history of the good in the world is made up of stories of people who despite obstacles pursued their passion and dreams to become great inventors, revered social activists, amazing parents idolized by their children, community organizers, wonderful spouses, talented musicians, true leaders, fearless adventurers, talented innovators, business leaders, entrepreneurs and so on.
This might be the only reason why you are alive today
On March 7, 1929, while conducting research into antibacterial substances, Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered Penicillin – an antibiotic which treats numerous types of bacterial infection.
Prior to the discovery and use of Penicillin people would have the area of an infection amputated or risk death.
Imagine, having to lose an arm or limb because of a simple infection.
Reports estimate that since 1942 Penicillin has saved an estimated 200 million lives – that is approximately 41% of the population of North America.
It really wasn’t that long ago when Penicillin was not available when you consider there are millions of people alive today who were born before 1942. Many people say that if Flemming didn’t pursue his research someone else would have eventually discovered it. I would agree that this may be true but who is to say if this would have eventually happened in 1942, 1952 or one hundred years later.
Guess what dies daily that penicillin CANNOT cure?
I am sure you guessed several things that are correct but did you guess… dreams?
That’s right, every day, in fact, every minute of the day many of us decide to bury our dreams because we have had one too many jokes made about us wasting our time pursuing some impossible dream by our friends, family and strangers. We also bury our dreams because it seems too big that it simply can’t be possible or because it seems too small so it must not be worthwhile.
One of my favourite quotes is by Les Brown: (reference my experience)
“The wealthiest place on earth is in the graveyard because in the graveyard we will find inventions which we were never exposed to, ideas and dreams which never became reality, hopes and aspirations that were never acted upon.”
Why I wrote this blog?
Are you someone who has buried their dream?
Are you someone who desperately wants to pursue your passion but is either afraid or doesn’t know how to get started?
Did you decide instead to invest your time in pursuing activities that rationally make sense but for which you have little to no passion? If so, I can totally understand why – let’s face it, pursuing your dreams isn’t as easy as some people make it out to be, but that said, here is my question: how do you feel now that you are not pursuing your dreams or passion?
How do you keep that intense burning desire to make your dream a reality, in check, when every fiber of you is screaming out to make it a reality?
Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that pursuing an activity because it is more rational or more likely to happen doesn’t make it meaningful, satisfying or purposeful. What I am saying is that maybe you can do this as well as pursue your dream.
Remember, pursuing your dreams doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach. Yes, there are many successful people who quit everything to pursue their passion but there are also many other successful people who, when initially starting out, worked part time towards pursuing their dreams. I have learned not to get trapped into thinking that there is only one way of achieving something. When you do this, you limit your possibilities and the chances of you taking action.
What’s my point?
My point is that I am asking you to give your dream a chance if you are someone who has given up on it.
If you are afraid to pursue your passion because you fear failure, I want to challenge you to maximize your potential by first believing in yourself.
If you are currently pursuing your dreams I want to commend you and encourage you to keep going.
Finally, if you have been successful in pursuing and achieving your dreams I want to congratulate you and ask you to help others do the same.
You have said all this but what’s the point of this blog?
The point of this blog is to make the same challenge to you as I made to myself which is to Think BIG be BOLD and ACT NOW towards pursuing your dreams and goals.
As one of the co-founders of Unleashed Possibilities my passion is to inspire, motivate and empower individuals to pursue and achieve their dreams and goals by increasing their productivity, accountability and the belief in their ability to succeed. Starting this blog, as I eluded to earlier, represents one of my first Think BIG, be BOLD, ACT NOW actions I took towards my dream: creating an online and offline community where people can leverage each other’s support, encouragement and knowledge to help each other pursue and achieve their dreams and goals.
In other words, and as crazy as this sounds, I want Unleashed Possibilities to be, figuratively speaking, the ‘penicillin’ that helps you to overcome all the challenges and disappointments that are sure to come when you pursue your dreams or follow your passion..
Let’s be honest, pursuing your passion is never easy. Along the way you encounter so many obstacles which make you want to forget about your dreams and return to having life live you instead of you living life.
What do I mean by this?
Are you living life or is life living you?
Are you waking up every morning (okay almost every morning) excited about what can happen because of the work and effort you had put towards achieving your dreams and goals the past few days?
Believe it or not, it is simply disciplined action that have allowed many of the people you consider successful to be where they are today. Remember what I said about hope? One benefit of taking action towards your dreams and goals is it gives hope. Taking action is like planting a seed; it doesn’t guarantee that the seed will grow into a tree and bear fruits but it creates the possibility that it could happen.
The same thing applies to when you take action towards your dreams and goals. When you wake in the morning you know, because of the actions you took the previous day, you have created the possibility of something happening today which could bring you closer to achieving your dream. It is that anticipation that brings hope, and hope that brings excitement and excitement that drives you daily.
Imagine how you would feel if during the day you walk into a situation where, what seemed impossible one year ago becomes a reality. This is only one example of what I call living life. Now consider if you chose to wake up every morning with the goal of simply trying to make it through the day or to the end of the work-week… you know that saying TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday).
Imagine how that would feel?
In fact, maybe that’s how you are feeling now.
If it is, then that’s what I call having life live you and I am here to tell you that it needs to STOP NOW!
The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step – Lao Tzu
One of the biggest challenges we face when pursuing our dreams is taking consistent action. Procrastination is a powerful force that can prevent the best of us from taking action. This is where remaining motivated is crucial when pursuing your passion.
Whether it is intrinsic or extrinsic you need to keep motivated.
I believe Zig Ziglar said it best when he said, “People often say motivation doesn’t last, well neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”
I for one agree! As human beings, the way we feel has a direct impact on whether we take action or continue to procrastinate.
My challenge to you… yes you!
My goal is to use this blog to inspire and motivate you to Think BIG, be BOLD and ACT NOW towards pursuing and achieving your dreams and goals.
If you decide to give your dream a chance by accepting my challenge here is what I promise to deliver every time you read this blog: I am going make it difficult for you not to act on your dreams, pursue your passion or ‘attack’ your goals… consider this your warning.
I am not going to tell you it is easy, because it isn’t.
Instead, what I am going to do, is prove to you it is possible, and share with you real life stories of those who have successfully pursued and achieved their dreams and goals… and those working towards them right now.
I am also going to share with with you effective tips and different approaches you can use to help you take ACTION towards your dreams and goals. There is no doubt that you may be familiar with some of this information. What makes this blog different is the way in which that information will be delivered. My goal is to make it connect with you in such a way that inspires, motivates and empowers you to ACT NOW.
Finally, one of the principles of Unleashed Possibilities is that there is no right way to do something; we all are individuals with different personalities, likes, dislikes and so on. Therefore, what we share with you through this blog is certainly not the only way but one of many ways you may want to consider when pursuing your dreams and goals. Our message is find the way, approach, strategy etc that works for you and then ACT on it. Please feel free to share your feedback through the comments sections or by email below. We can both learn from each other but for that to happen communication and a mind open to new possibilities are important.
Remember, when you believe something is possible, you begin to have hope, and when you have hope you are inspired to act, and when you act possibilities become endless.
Let this journey begin…
